The News-Advance quotes Senator Emmett Hanger:
“The bill itself speaks to a physical - which would be a surgical - castration, a permanent removal.”
“As an option I think it’s an excellent option that should be out there for treatment,” Hanger said.
SB 679 would give convicted sex offenders the option to be castrated instead of going to jail. I’m undecided on this bill. Somehow, I didn’t think castration as a punishment would be something seen beyond the history books.

I think the bill allows the convict to have this option as opposed to jail.
It shouldnt have any Constitutional concerns and I think its a good bill. I am doubting it would be accepted by many people anyway, but having that option is a good idea.
Seems to me that several years back there was a Texas sex offender who voluntarily underwent castration and drug treatment so he could get out of jail. Don’t know what the outcome of that was.
My concern about this is that almost all sex crimes have nothing to do with sex and everything to do with control and power. I don’t see this as a deterrent to future behavior.
Sad.
