<description>Everything you write about was duly noted in a story by Daily Press; no bluster on your part.

The Iowa bumper stickers; the dearth of Miller signs, and so on.

Here's their link. Enjoy:)

		<description>Kenton,
It was good to see you again at yesterday's Shad Planking. Your report on the event was excellent. Mine in the Charlottesville Daily Progress today, below, is much shorter and slower than your post. Keep up the great blogging!

Politicians gobble up shad
Planking kicks off official campaign season
By Bob Gibson

Thursday, April 20, 2006

WAKEFIELD - Virginia’s longest running annual bipartisan political rite of spring took on a distinctly federal flavor Wednesday as U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Fairfax County, and his two potential Democratic opponents mingled with a few thousand Virginians out to enjoy beer, politics and baked, bony fish.

Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell delivered a running monologue of one-liners as the featured speaker at the Wakefield Ruritan Club’s 58th annual Shad Planking, a $20-a-head charity fundraiser set in a pine grove and featuring tons of shad baked on wooden planks.

McDonnell, a veteran former delegate who defeated state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath County, by 360 votes last year, cracked fun at the fish and politicians alike, comparing the shad to former Gov. Mark R. Warner, an Alexandria Democrat now mounting a presidential campaign.

“Shad is a migratory fish,” McDonnell told the crowd. “It comes to Virginia. It gets its business done and then it gets out of town.” He then asked Allen, seated eight feet to his left on stage, “George, have you seen Mark Warner?” The line also drew laughs because both potential presidential candidates recently spoke in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful James Webb, a novelist and former Republican Navy secretary under President Reagan, won the Shad Planking’s annual sign wars as volunteers for Webb plastered 6,000 to 8,000 signs along roads approaching the event.

Webb shook hundreds of hands in the crowd for hours, as did Allen, stopping for conversations and offers of encouragement. Webb’s June 13 primary opponent, Harris Miller, didn’t stay longer than 90 minutes, leaving before he could hear McDonnell’s assessment of the pair of Democrats vying to challenge Allen on Nov. 7.

McDonnell commended Miller, a former Fairfax County Democratic chairman and wealthy former Capitol Hill lobbyist, for running. “I just think it takes a tremendous amount of courage, looking at the national political climate in Washington today, for somebody to look at this race and say, ‘This is a great time for a D.C. insider lobbyist to run against George Allen,’” the attorney general said.

He saluted Webb as a Navy veteran and noted that six years ago the former Republican had campaigned for Allen.

“I was a little confused when I found out he’s running as a Democrat,” McDonnell said. “I was wondering if that means his Republican barbecue this summer is canceled. It seems like Jim’s got a little in common with John Kerry, and that is, you know, he was for George Allen before he was against him.”

Taking a poke at his former colleagues in the state legislature, McDonnell added, “I really like Jim’s motto. His motto, his book, his mantra is ‘Born Fighting.’ I know that sounds original but Jim stole that from the Virginia General Assembly.”

Susan Mariner of Virginia Beach, one of more than 50 Webb volunteers in the crowd, said she had put up signs along area roads since 8 a.m. “I know that we bought 8,000,” she said. “We want Mr. Allen to know Mr. Webb has some seriously devoted volunteers who will work for him.”
