Hey Almostthere: What part of "NoVa transportation crisis" and "wasteful tax spending for luxury TV shows" don't you understand? Although $3.6m is not a lot, it's just one example of how Richmond has wasted our taxes while our roads get more and more gridlocked. I don't see you mentioning a better way to help fund our road needs!

Im going to save the donation I would have sent to NPR and make a political donation to Kookinelli's opponent. Now THERE is a good use of my taxpaying dollars!!

What a goofball -- Virginians deserve better.

Or maybe he does not feel government has a legitimate role funding commercial TV.

NPR and PBS ARE commercial TV. Their funding is only slightly different than traditional non-public TV. Their commercials are all NPR/PBS voices doing two sentence "sponsorship" announcements, but they are commercials.

You overstate your case that PBS would end without state funding. PBS directors themselves claim that govt funding helps bring new programming (the kind kids don't watch) but is not essential for daily operations. The children's programming are tremendously profitable and would find a way to stay on the air even without state funding.

Lack of tax money does not equal killing PBS.

Kenton,

I think the issue here is whether the state government should be paying for luxury goods -- such as entertainment organizations -- when we are in the middle of a transportation crisis.

I am one of Cuccinelli's constituents and I support his efforts to find more space in the budget for transportation money. If people want NPR to continue, rather than legislating its existence, why not donate to it?
